Bill Carson's 1959 Stratocaster to be Auctioned
by TOM WATSON (September 14, 2006) On October 13, 2006, the New York office of Christie's auction house will offer the 1959 Fiesta Red, custom-built Stratocaster that Fender made for Bill Carson, a Western Swing guitarist and Fender employee whose career with Fender spanned more than 40 years. Carson began his association with Fender as a part-time assembly person and product development field tester and had a significant influence on the evolution of the Stratocaster...(read)
Robin Trower Interview
by BRIAN D. HOLLAND (March 22, 2006)
With an extensive repertoire of classic hits and album-oriented rock to his credit, Robin Trower is one of very few authentic '60s and '70s blues-rock guitar heroes still keeping it alive today. He tours the world extensively, entertaining fans with memorable songs, such as ‘Bridge Of Sighs’, ‘Daydream’, ‘I Can’t Wait Much Longer’, ‘Day Of The Eagle’, ‘Too Rolling Stoned’, and with new material that eventually becomes as enduring as the others. The sight of him standing onstage with his signature Fender Stratocaster in front of his Marshall stacks is as characteristic to his fans as his classic songs..(read)
Monster Mike Welch Interview
by BRIAN D. HOLLAND (February 23, 2006)
Now 26-years-old, Mike Welch started playing guitar when he was eight. This led to his presence at local Boston blues jams by age 11. He played at the opening of Boston’s House of Blues when he was 13. Shortly thereafter, he became known as the house prodigy of Dan Aykroyd and the House of Blues management. In fact, it was Aykroyd who tagged him ‘Monster Mike Welch’, primarily because he was so good and so powerful at such a young age...(read)
George Gruhn on the State of the Vintage Stratocaster, 2006
by GEORGE GRUHN (January 13, 2006)
During the year 2005, price escalation on pre CBS Fender Stratocasters, Telecasters, and 1950s Les Pauls went at a pace I have never before encountered in my 43 years of experience dealing vintage instruments. While investors and speculators have made some excellent profits during the past year, I would strongly caution that past performance is not necessarily an indication of what they will do in the future...(read)
Yngwie Malmsteen Interview
by HUGH OCHOA (October 22, 2005)
Born Lars Johann Yngwie Lannerback, in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1963, Yngwie Malmsteen came from a family of talented musicians with an interest in classical music. In 1970 he developed an interest in the guitar after watching a news item the day that Jimi Hendrix died - September 18, 1970. The footage showed the psychedelic icon burning a guitar on stage and Yngwie was hooked. Even at seven-years-old, he knew he wanted to be a rock star...(read)
Eric Johnson Interview
by RICK LANDERS (August 19, 2005)
A stampede of both music legends and one hit wonders have played hometown gigs within Austin’s city limits including Janis Joplin, the 13th Floor Elevators, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Fred and His Playboy Band, as well as Texas blues brothers Edgar and Johnny Winter. Born in Austin in 1954, bright-eyed Eric Johnson emerged on the music scene in the late 1960s with a group called Mariani. The band released a psychedelic record with a limited run of 100 copies. Today, a single copy can fetch up to $3,000 from...(read)
Rory Gallagher Interview
by RAY MINHINNETT (August 3, 2005)
Tragically, guitarist and singer Rory Gallagher (March 2, 1948 - June 14, 1995), was taken from us far too early, and although he left an incredible legacy and body of work, his wonderful and unique presence is sorely missed on the performance circuit everywhere and by countless faithful fans throughout the world. The interview that follows was conducted a year or so before Rory's passing, and its introduction written shortly after my meeting with Rory at a hotel in Chelsea. At the time, I had written a movie about the Fender Stratocaster...(read)
State of the Vintage Stratocaster, 2005
by FRIEDMAN and DAVIDSON (July 15, 2005)
Talk about the Ferrari market heating up in 1988, there has never been as much forward movement in Stratocaster values than this year. Last year, a maple neck 1957 Stratocaster went for $15,000 - $17,000. Today, that same guitar has so many new and old time collecters fighting for every last one prices have reached $20,000 - $30,000. Forget about Custom Color vintage Strats - find an original and name your price. 1965 Stratocasters are going from $12,000 to $15,000; 1966 Sunburst Strats $9,000 to an unheard of $13,000. Some dealers won't even sell their stock...(read)
Albert Cummings Interview
by BRIAN HOLLAND (June 19, 2005)
Although I knew I was talking to a talented bluesman in the interview, a guitarist I’ve been listening to for a couple of years now, I was overwhelmed by his modesty and the "regular guy" air about him. The fact that he’s a family man with two young kids and still works hard running a successful construction business probably has a lot to do with that. It is good to see, though, that he does take the time to travel about the country to play his brand of house rockin’ blues guitar when he’s not building...(read)
Buddy Guy Interview
by R. LANDERS and T. WATSON (April 6, 2005)
A week after his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Buddy Guy is back doing what he does best. Playing the blues. Born 1936, Guy migrated from his native Louisiana and the Baton Rouge blues scene to Chicago in 1957/1958, taking with him a flair for showmanship inherited from Louisiana's Guitar Slim. In Chicago, Buddy became a member of the Chicago-blues elite that included Muddy Waters, Otis Rush....(read)
Book Review: "The Stratocaster Chronicles"
by TOM WATSON (February 11, 2005)
I own precisely twenty-nine books. Not much of a library for someone writing a book review. The number, to a book, is twenty-nine because I counted them this morning. Though an avid reader, three years ago I sold, gave away, or abandoned every book I owned that didn't mean something significant to me. I wanted to travel light when I moved from California to...(read) |
